In the heart of Périgord Noir, the Dordogne flows along a green valley lined with castles and picturesque villages. Rouffillac castle is situated on a cape which overlooks the river, a few kilometres upstream from Beynac, near the most beautiful villages of France.

From Prehistory...

Occupied by Neandertal man and the Cro-Magnon man, the Dordogne preserves traces of human activity from 40 000 years before Christ.
Lascaux caves are one of the most fascinating examples cave-wall painting in the world.

Situated in a unique cliff scenery, the village of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac also contains treasures of prehistoric art : tools, paintings, carving on stone, hidden in numerous cavities...

To the period of cathedrals and castles

The sacred architecture of Périgord is characterized by its domed vault One of the purest examples of this style is the Saint Front Cathedral in Périgueux and Souillac Abbey church in the nearby region of Quercy.

Until holiday time.
Green, white, purple or black are the four colours of Périgord.

Green
Like the northern hills their countless streams.

Brantôme is an extraordinary watery town occupied since Prehistory. Come and visit its cave dweller houses and its Benedictine Abbey built by Charlemagne.

Green Périgord is a region of woods, pools, hills and castles.

White
Like the stone of the limestone plateau which crosses the department of Dordogne.

The city of Périgueux and its cathedral and the majestic Hautefort castle are made of this white material.

The ground of White Périgord on which one can find the famous Périgord truffles is covered with pubescent oaks. Fishermen and walkers enjoy the Auvezère and Isle rivers.

Purple
Like the noble wines of Bergerac, similar to the prestigious wines of Bordeaux.
Saussignac, Rosette, Monbazillac, Pécharmant, Montravel, Côtes de Bergerac and Bergerac are underestimated but delicious wines.

Purple Périgord is Michel de Montaigne's native home.

Black
Like the undergrowth of oaks and chestnut trees which cover the area.
Come and visit Beynac, Domme or Laroque-Gageac villages, the medieval city of Sarlat, the castles of Castelnaud and Milandes or the 20000 year-old paintings of the Lascaux caves.

Black Périgord has been fashioned by the Dordogne and Vézère rivers. It's a land of history and authenticity.
